Filming

Here is a photo of Ahmed setting up the camera, ready to film singer Daniel lip syncing to the song Fire + Bones by The Midight Heavy. We filmed Daniel singing the sog the whole way through from three different angles, close up, mid shot from the side and extreme close up. We will now edit the footage into the music video.

Magazine Advert

Helpful advice that we should remember whilst creating the magazine advert:

- Make sure all the relevant information is included.
The customer needs to know the event, the date any any other bonus information such as reviews or a website so this needs to be clearly advertised on our magazine advert.

- Find a software or technique to create the advertisment.
How we create the advert will depend on which medium we are using to advertise. Here are some basic ideas
  • If we are making a small scale print ad, such as a flyer or magazine advert, a good programme to use would be Adobe InDesign or Photoshop.
  • If we are making a video ad, try working with iMovie, Picasa or Windows Media Player.
  • For an audio ad, good programmes to use are Audacity or iTunes.
  • For a large scale advertisment, you would probably have to contact a print shop to get the work done.

Contingency Plan

Here is a screenshot of the contingency plan for our product and how we plan to deal with any problems that we may face.

Risk Assessment

Here is a assessment of the very few risks invovled in making our music video.

Key points to note regarding location

We were looking out for unusual or interesting backgrounds to use as the background which the singer will stand against.

Name and number of location contact:

We would contact Mr Johnson, our media studies teacher, if we encountered any problems or had any queries regarding the filming or editing of our video.

Health and Safety Issues to note:

Climbing over fences
- Slipping on muddy floors
- Using matches
- Carrying equipment on public transport
Potential Filming Problems :

- Not having enough shots for our video

Additional Notes:  (map of area/weather forecast etc)

The weather was similar to this on the days we filmed. We were lucky that the weather remained constant on the different days that we filmed.

Frankie has begun to edit the below image to use as the front cover of the CD. It's important to note some of the changes that we've made to the image in order to make it look appropriate for an album cover.

1. Darkened the main image.
2. Increased the contrast so that the colours stand out more.
3. Burnt the edges out of the right side of the image so that it fades into black backgrounds in the next pages.

New ideas
1. Turning the contrast off, makes images such as the match brighter on the back.
2. Adding a bold title in some sort of blocky font, then adding the name of the band at the bottom with a different font.

Editing

This photo shows myself editing the shots we have for the music video. We currently have just under one minutes worth of footage that has been edited and put into sequence.

Magazine Advertisement

Here are some magazine adverts that could influence our own.

This advert for The Arctic Monkeys is student made, as it doesn't include any important information about the release of the album or the band. I have chosen to include this one as the bold unique text is the eye catching element and shows that even an advert with limited colour still looks good.

This advertisement for The Best Of The Vines perfectly utilises the name of the band, incorporating swirling vines and lush eye catching green leaves for a simple but effective advert.

I like this student advert because of the close up image of a guitar, which automatically gives the viewer an idea of the kind of music it would be- more indie, definitely not electro pop or heavy rock. I also really like the use of text and colour- it's simple but works very well with the whole advert.

I think we could take inspiration from the text used in this advert, and the clash of colour which draws attention to the songs featured in the album. As we want a limited colour palette this could be a good option for us.

Magazine Advertisement

Now we are progressing with our video, we have started to focus on the digipak and magazine advert. A magazine advert needs to be unique, creative and most importantly eye catching. We would like our video, digipak and magazine advert to all link in someway, perhaps by using similar images, effects and text.

I found this magazine advert from Kasabian to be eye catching because it's unique.  As you can see the advert shows the album cover which is based on the "King" playing card with a detailed image on the front. The king card is suitable as it relates to the name of the album, named Empire. The naked body of the female figure alludes to the whole 'rock and roll' attitude of the band.

The magazine advert also includes the relevant information about the album, such as the release date and also ratings by influential and noted rock magazines.

Digipak

For the cover of our digipak we have used a still image from our music video footage. The reason we are doing this is to ensure that we keep the continuity between the music video and the digipak.
With this image, we are going to experiment with using different effects for the digipak cover. One idea which I think would look the best would be darkening the edges of the image but increasing the contrast therefore enhancing certain images. Along with these we would add the song title Fire + Bones and the band name - The Midnight Heavy - along with other style additions that will be used to try and make the digipak more unique. We also have to think about the symbols we may have to include on the digipak as standard, such as barcode, recycling symbol and parental advisory sticker.

Digipak- Initial Ideas

These photos show the inital drawings my group have made of the digipak full design. We decided on a continuious design that flows throughout, with the exceptions being the front and back cover which will have still shots from the actually video on them. We will edit these images on Photoshop, adding more shadow and tone.

Digipak

This is a rough design idea that Frankie designed for the Digipak cover artwork. The idea was to make a cover that looks relevant to the song. The cover artwork is a combiation of 8-bit design featuring a skull- reference to the song title Fire + Bones. The mixture of these elements gives a unique look to the digipak and we may also incorporate this feature into the magazine advert.

Filming

This photo shows Ahmed setting up the camera to film the shots of Daniel throwing lyric sheets to the floor. This scene was (hopefully) clearly inspired by Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues. We placed Daniel in the centre of the frame in an ally way. The reason we chose to film in an ally way was because the genre is rock/indie and by looking at other videos in this genre, they give a careless vibe to the video and the veiwer wouldnt expect this kind of music to have the same kind of setting as a pop video.

Filming

These are screen shots of when my group and I went to film in Goodmayes Park, Dagenham. We filmed Daniel singing the first two verses of the song, we filmed multiple takes just in case when it got to editing we found an error in one of the takes. We told Daniel to keep a straight face when we were filming as, due to the genre of the music, we wanted the video to have a serious nature.
My favourite shots are the ones in which Daniel was unaware that we were filming, so he relaxed more and smiled. I don't know if we'll use these shots of Daniel smiling in the actual music video however I would like to use the screen shots on the Digipak.

During filming, our group decided that we wanted to incorporate a clear influence from a classic video that is easily recognisable. We chose 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' by Bob Dylan, who featured on my Top 100 post.
One of the reasons we chose to take elements from this specific video is that the concept is quite simple; lyrics are written on pieces of paper and then thrown away in time to the song. The throwaway nature of Dylan's video is a comment at the growing nature of consumerism in 1960's America.

Lyrics

Lyrics: 'Fire + Bones' by The Midnight Heavy

Dirty and I just don't care,
Dirty when you run your nails through my hair,
Dirty undercover lover
Lay yourself around me

It's dirty when you call my name
It's dirty when you pull my hair like a mane,
Dirty undercover lover, lay yourself around me
Round me, round me

Loose your buttons and bows
Get some fire in your bones (ohhhh oh oh oh)
What's it to ya
Bones

And now we're sipping it up,
Just tearin' it up
Just the passion of love

And now we're sipping it up
Just tearin' it up
Just the passion of love

Dirty when you call my name
Dirty when you pull my hair like a mane
Dirty undercover lover
Lay yourself around me

Dirty and I just don't care
Dirty wen you pull my hair and hair
Dirty undercover lover
Lay yourself around me
Round me, round me

Loose your buttons and bows
Get some fire in your bones (ohhhh oh oh oh)
What's it to ya
Bones

And now we're sipping it up
Just tearin' it up
Just the passion of love
